Testing & Inspection
What is Inspection testing?
Electrical Inspection and Testing is a crucial procedure carried out by qualified electricians to ensure compliance with various regulations such as HASAWA 1974, EAWR 1989, and BS7671. As per Regulation 610.1 of BS 7671, “every installation shall, during erection and on completion before being put into service be inspected and tested to verify, so far as reasonably practicable, that the requirements of the regulations have been met.”
To adhere to this regulation, qualified electricians must perform a comprehensive inspection and testing procedure. For new electrical installations, this procedure is followed by the completion of the Electrical Installation Certificate. In the case of alterations to existing electrical installations, a Minor Electrical Work Certificate is required.
Periodic inspection & testing
Regulation 621.1 mandates that “where required, periodic inspection and testing of every electrical installation shall be carried out in accordance with regulations 621.2 to 621.5 in order to determine, as far as reasonably practicable, whether the installation is in a satisfactory condition for continued service.”
This regulation applies to electrical installations that are not newly constructed or altered. In such cases, a periodic inspection is necessary, which includes a thorough inspection and testing procedure, followed by the completion of the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
Both the “person ordering the work” (i.e., owner) and the “competent person” (qualified electrician) conducting the inspection and testing must retain these certificates. The sequence of tests to be performed remains the same in both cases.
Sequence of tests
During both initial verification and periodic inspection, each circuit must undergo a series of tests, and it is crucial to follow the correct sequence.
The sequence of tests typically includes continuity testing of protective conductors, including main and supplementary bonding, continuity testing of ring final circuit conductors, insulation resistance testing, polarity testing, earth fault loop impedance testing, prospective fault current testing, RCD testing, phase sequence testing, and functional testing.
